Student Academic Rights and Responsibilities

Students share responsibility for creating and maintaining an environment that supports teaching, learning, inquiry, and the open exchange of ideas. Students are expected to:

• Cooperate with instructors and fellow students to foster a classroom and conference environment that promotes learning, respectful dialogue, free inquiry, and freedom of expression.
• Understand and uphold the academic standards, requirements, and expectations established for each course in which they are enrolled.
• Take primary responsibility for learning and engaging with the content of their courses.
• Evaluate instructors on the basis of academic performance, instructional effectiveness, and course-related matters, rather than on personal beliefs, viewpoints, or activities unrelated to academic standards.
• Evaluate an instructor’s performance in a course solely on an academic basis and not on opinions or conduct unrelated to academic standards. Information regarding an instructor’s views, beliefs, or political associations that are acquired through the student-instructor relationship should be treated as confidential.
