Course and Credit Information

In accordance with federal regulations and Middle States Commission on Higher Education expectations, a credit hour is a unit of academic credit awarded for the successful completion of coursework that satisfies the institution's standards for instructional time and student learning. Credit may be earned through coursework completed at Keuka College or accepted in transfer from another accredited institution. The College's assignment of credit hours is consistent with the federal definition of a credit hour contained in 34 CFR § 600.2.

Degree requirements are stated in semester credit hours. One semester credit hour generally represents a minimum of one hour of direct faculty instruction and at least two hours of out-of-class student work each week for approximately fifteen weeks, or an equivalent amount of work completed over a different period of time. Equivalent student work may occur through laboratory experiences, internships, practica, studio courses, clinical experiences, field experiences, and other academic activities.

In determining the amount of work associated with a credit hour, the College may consider a variety of instructional delivery methods, measures of student learning, academic calendars, disciplines, and degree levels, consistent with federal regulations and accreditation requirements.

The proportion of classroom, laboratory, clinical, field-based, and independent study time varies by course.

Quarter credit hours earned at another accredited institution are converted to semester credit hours by multiplying the quarter credit hours by 0.67.
