Article XII - Curriculum Committee
SECTION 1 - Purpose
The Curriculum Committee serves to evaluate and provide initial approval of policies and curriculum for undergraduate and graduate programs.
SECTION 2 - Composition
- The Curriculum Committee shall consist of five faculty members elected for terms of three years, with ex officio members as described in Article VI - Section II.
- The registrar or designate is also an ex officio member of the Curriculum Committee.
SECTION 3 - Responsibilities
- To ensure that all undergraduate and graduate course and program proposals contain appropriate assessment plans.
- To make new course proposals available to faculty for comment 30 days prior to the Curriculum Committee decision.
- To provide initial approval to the provost of additions, changes, and/or deletions of academic programs (e.g., major, concentration within a major, minor, or certificate) and communicate them to the academic faculty.
- To provide initial approval to the provost of changes to a course title, course number, course credit, course description, course prerequisites, or designation of course as liberal arts and communicate them to the academic faculty.
- To provide initial approval to the provost of Introductory Topics in (XXX 295) and Advanced Topics in (XXX 495) courses, and Group Field Period® (FP 302) experiences.
- To provide initial approval to the academic faculty concerning changes to undergraduate and graduate academic program content and structure, and any other academic matters directly pertaining to curriculum.
- To monitor and provide recommendations to the provost concerning courses and programs added to and/or deleted from the catalog and communicate those recommendations to the academic faculty.
- To monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of College-wide and divisional requirements, including prerequisites, and make recommendations to the appropriate group.
- To periodically review the impact of the curriculum of Field Period®, student-initiated majors, independent studies, and continuing education and to provide recommendations to the appropriate group.
SECTION 4 - Academic Program Sustainability
The Curriculum Committee shall receive an annual report from the Office of Records and Registration identifying academic programs with a two-year history of four of fewer newly enrolled majors and five or fewer graduated majors. The Curriculum Committee shall conduct its review to assess the program's viability and the collateral impact of the program on the College curriculum and make a recommendation to the full faculty for its vote.
The results of the full faculty vote will be transmitted by the president to the Board of Trustees, who retain final authority to close academic programs. The Board of Trustees may also elect to close academic programs without faculty vote, as deemed necessary.
