EDU-316 Childhood Literacy and the Diverse Learner

A continued investigation of the methods and materials for instruction in reading, writing, and other language arts for the elementary-aged child. Using the New York State Common Core Standards for Language Arts, the course will emphasize the individualization of instruction for children who are gifted and those who exhibit difficulty in learning literacy skills in the self-contained classroom, in pull-out programs, and with specialists working within the self-contained classroom. Students will also learn about the major theories and research related to structure and acquisition of first and second language in order to identify legal, linguistic, cultural, community, and familial topics related to working with Limited English Proficient (LEP) student population. Interaction with consultant teachers, other specialists, and parents will be addressed.
