Residential Space Fixtures

Residential Space Fixtures

Room and Apartment Decorations

  • Precautions must be taken when decorating your space to ensure personal safety and to avoid damaging the residence halls and apartments. Residential students are responsible for removing decorations and restoring the room to its original condition upon fully checking out of that residential space. If adhesives are used and are unable to be removed completely, additional damage billing may be assessed to the student(s).
  • All electrical appliances must be Underwriter Laboratory (UL) approved and should be in good working order.
  • No natural holiday/Christmas trees are permitted in the student rooms or corridors. Non-combustible artificial trees may be used in rooms and lounges.
  • LED lights are recommended for us as they produce less heat and consume less electricity. Torchiere and halogen lamps are prohibited. When leaving your residential space, please turn lights off when not in use to promote safety and sustainability on campus. When checking out of your residential space for a break, please unplug all lights.
  • Use of any type of extension cords is prohibited. UL-listed surge protectors with an on/off switch are safe to use in your residential space.
  • Only fire-retardant materials are permitted within the residence halls and apartments. Generally, the expense is no greater than dangerously flammable goods.
  • No items may be hung from the ceiling, pipes, sprinklers, or smoke detectors.
  • Snow sprays, watercolors and magic markers must not be applied to any surface of the building.
  • Do not block exits or decorate corridor lights and fire detectors. All doors must open a full 90 degrees.
  • Do not store items (shoes, sports equipment, furniture, etc.) in the common-use hallways of the resident halls and apartments.

Room Furniture

There may be an excessive cleaning fee charged for the removal of any student’s non-College furniture which they have accumulated in the room during the course of the year. (i.e., sofas, loveseats, chairs, etc.) and which must be removed by Facilities professional staff. This includes furniture remaining in the hallway adjacent to a student’s room.

Room Painting

Students may not paint their rooms. Students who do so will be charged for excessive dorm damage.

Room Changes and Hall Transfers

Students who wish to request a room change or hall transfer must first consult with their Resident Assistant (RA).

  • The first step for any student requesting a room change due to roommate conflict or differences must look into mediation with Student Life staff.

Room changes and hall transfers are not guaranteed. We encourage and expect our students to work through issues that may arise between their roommate(s).

Room changes and hall transfers are dependent on availability of space at the time of request. Students may be added to a waiting list, if and when space becomes available across all campus housing. Students will be notified via email by the Office of Student Life.

Housing assignments cannot be changed without the authorization of the professional Student Life staff from the building(s) involved and the Office of Student Life.

Room Condition Report(s) & Damage Billing Responsibility

Room Condition Report(s)

The Office of Student Life documents and records the existing condition of all residential spaces prior to the student moving in using a Room Condition Report (RCR).

Students are responsible for any damage to their room beyond the limits of normal wear and tear. To protect both the College and the student, and to provide a record of needed maintenance, Student Life staff complete a Room Condition Report (RCR) prior to student check-in to their residence hall rooms. Students can report and submit any noticeable damage in their apartment or room to the Office of Campus Life within 48 hours of taking occupancy. It is from this initial RCR, any form submission, and closing/move-out assessment that room damage is determined at the time of check-out.

The Office of Student Life completes RCRs anytime that a student fully vacates their residential space (i.e. room change, hall transfer, or end-of-the year checkout).

For end-of-the year checkout, a student can complete an Express Checkout or a Standard Checkout form.

  • Express Checkout - The student agrees to the current condition of their residential space and turns their key into the Office of Campus Safety.
  • Standard Checkout - The student signs up for a date and time to check out of their residential space with a Resident Assistant (RA) and turns their key in at that date and time.
