Appliance and Prohibited Item Policy

All electrical appliances must be Underwriter Laboratory (UL) approved and should be in good working order. All appliances are subject to approval at the discretion of the Office of Student Life.

No air conditioners or space heaters are permitted, unless approved by the Office of Student Accessibility.

Toasters, toaster ovens, and any appliances with an open heating element (coil) are expressly forbidden, unless approved by the Office of Student Accessibility.

Prohibited items include, but are not limited to:

  • Air conditioners (unless approved by the Office of Student Accessibility),
  • Air fryers
  • Candles and candle warmers,
  • Contact paper,
  • Curtains, flags, and tapestries (that do not display or have attached a flame-retardant tag),
  • Dart boards (magnetic and non-magnetic),
  • Electric griddles and hot plates,
  • Extension cords,
  • Grills (electric, propane, and charcoal/lighter fluid),
  • Halogen lamps,
  • Incense,
  • LED strip lights,
  • Multi-plug adapters,
  • Neon signs,
  • Non-LED string lights,
  • Parking delineators or traffic cones,
  • Pets (except fish in a 5-gallon tank),
  • Road signs,
  • Space heaters,
  • Toasters and toaster ovens (unless approved by the Office of Student Accessibility),
  • Torchiere lamps,
  • Weapons and related items (please see Fireworks, Weapons and Noxious Materials policy) and
  • Any item of a combustible nature and/or with an open heating element.

Students are allowed to have small refrigerators (under 3.8 cubic feet), televisions (105 - 135 watts), and microwaves (900 - 1,200 watts) in their rooms.

Students are responsible for any room damage caused by their appliances. According to published policy, refrigerators must be cleaned out and defrosted prior to each break period unless otherwise noted.

Illegal items or items that pose severe potential harm (items such as controlled substances, drug paraphernalia, hazardous chemicals or materials, and weapons) will be confiscated and will not be returned to students.
