Student Handbook 2025-2026

Health and Safety Inspections

Health and safety inspections occur at intervals throughout the academic year. Inspections are done with at least two authorized staff members present.

In order to ensure the safety of students and to meet health and sanitation standards, the College reserves the right to inspect residence hall rooms and apartments. This may be done on a regular basis or when theft of personal or College property is presumed to have occurred or when violations of health, safety, or sanitation standards are suspected.

Room inspections are generally announced in advance or made when the occupant is present unless there is an emergency situation.

Random monthly inspections will be conducted throughout the academic year by the Offices of Campus Life and Facilities.

Monthly inspections of the Harrington Hall bathrooms will be conducted throughout the academic year by the Offices of Campus Life and Facilities.

Authorized Staff

The Offices of Campus Life, Campus Safety, and Facilities reserve the right to enter all residence halls and apartment spaces to conduct and perform any and all inspections.

Break & End of the semester Closings

The Office of Campus Life will perform closing procedures of all residential buildings during the following break periods:

  • November/Thanksgiving Break
  • End of the Fall Semester
  • Spring Break
  • End of the Spring/Academic Year

Before leaving, all residents should complete the following tasks to prepare for closing and departure. If not completed, Campus Life staff will complete and document as necessary.

  • Close and lock all windows.
  • Leave window blinds/shades open (unless you are located on the ground floor).
  • Unplug all electrical appliances to avoid fire hazards.
  • Defrost and unplug your refrigerator. Leave the refrigerator door open. [*Note: In the apartments, the full-size refrigerator (provided by the College) does not need to be unplugged. *]
    • This step does not apply to the October and November/Thanksgiving breaks.
  • Turn off all lights.
  • Empty trash cans and throw out all perishable items.
  • Lock the door to protect your belongings.

Fire Safety Inspection

The State of New York requires an annual fire safety inspection of our campus, which is traditionally performed during the Fall semester in conjunction with the Offices of Campus Life, Campus Safety and Facilities.

Please remember the following:

  • Do not smoke or burn candles or incense in your room.
  • Do not use extension cords without built-in circuit protection or reset button.
  • Do not use halogen bulbs or lamps.

  • Do not use holiday string lights or LED strip lights.
  • Do not use appliances with exposed heating elements in your room.
  • Curtains, flags, and tapestries must be fire-retardant with the manufacturer's tag intact. For flags and tapestries, you cannot hang them in windows nor obstruct any emergency exits.
  • Decorations may not cover more than 10% of a door or a wall.
  • Fire exits are not blocked.
  • Fire doors (including exterior and interior doors) cannot propped open.
  • Fire systems (i.e. smoke detectors) are not to be covered or tampered with.

  • Cook only in designated areas and do not leave cooking unattended.

Note: All these points of emphasis are to be followed all year long. Please reference the Appliance and Prohibited Item Policy under Residential Policies for additional information.
