Health and Counseling Services
The Health and Counseling Center is located in the Keuka Commons building and provides assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and referrals for many common health conditions. The Health Center operates much like a doctor’s office such that health services are billed to the student’s insurance company. No copays are accepted at the time of the visit; billing is processed through Finger Lakes Health after the conclusion of the visit. Visits are in person but may be conducted via telehealth if the practitioner agrees that a physical assessment is not necessary for the condition the student is seeking assistance with.
Students can expect to be seen in the Health Center for concerns such as upper respiratory infections, gastrointestinal distress, urinary tract infections, STIs, as well as muscle strains and sprains, to name a few. Other services provided are testing for COVID-19, Flu, TB, pregnancy, STIs, blood glucose, and mono; strep throat screening; urine testing for infection; physicals; clearance for sports; and counseling for physical and mental health related conditions. The registered nurse also gives allergy and birth control shots.
Additionally, the Health and Counseling Center offers confidential psychological counseling during the academic year to all registered students. There is no fee for this service. Students can address a full range of emotional, developmental, and relational issues with the assistance of professional staff members. The Health and Counseling Center website has updated information on the services and resources that are provided.
The nurse practitioner can call in prescriptions to area pharmacies. The college works with several pharmacies in Penn Yan that will deliver prescriptions or over-the-counter medications to Keuka College Health and Counseling Center once items have been paid for. The Health Center bills insurance, so students should bring their insurance card to each visit. Students will be referred if their needs exceed what the Health and Counseling Center is able to
provide on campus.
Wellness education is also an important component of the Health and Counseling Center. Education on various topics, such as alcohol awareness, stress management, and sex education is available. Several student events are held each semester in support of these wellness themes, and informative displays can also be seen on the walls of the office and around campus.
Students can schedule appointments by calling (315) 279-5368, emailing health@keuka.edu or stopping in the Health and Counseling Center. The Center is open Monday-Friday from 8:00 am-4:30 pm. The office is closed from 1:00-1:30 pm for lunch. After-hours care is available through several Urgent Care Centers in Canandaigua and Geneva. Students may also choose to seek emergency care at Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hospital Emergency Room, located at 418 N. Main St. in Penn Yan.
A completed health form, which includes New York State immunization requirements, is mandatory for all students. Students without a complete health form are not eligible to receive health care services or participate in intercollegiate sports; a health hold will be applied to their student account if the health form remains incomplete after 30 days of the first day of class. Because college first-year students are one of the groups most at risk for contracting meningitis, the College requires all new residential students (first-year and transfers) to have a meningitis vaccine. Verification should be included with the health form, which can be found in the student health portal. All vaccination and health policies can be found on the Health Center tile in the student health portal, keuka.studenthealthportal.com as well as the Health and Counseling page on the Keuka College website.
The Health and Counseling Center works in partnership with several local agencies, Yates County Public Health, Finger Lakes Health, Finger Lakes Community Health, Safe Harbors, Finger Lakes Counseling and Recovery Agency as well a few local mental health practitioners, when students require more assistance than the College facility can offer.
