SPA-225 Spanish in the Community †
In this service-learning course, students build on their communicative competence in Spanish through targeted, engaged research and work with Latino/a and Hispanic related organizations in the local community. These may include literacy organizations, healthcare organizations, public libraries, and K-12 schools. We will learn about the broader context of community organizations and the challenges they face. Students will learn about Spanish language and culture while participating in meaningful activities and the community. These activities will allow them to develop their knowledge while strengthening community-college partnerships. Active student reflection is structured throughout the course. Faculty will provide guidelines and resources for students to work within existing projects or to develop their own ideas; community partners will provide networks and planning assistance.
