SPA-220 Introduction to Spanish Translation and Interpretation

In this course, students build on their communicative competence in Spanish to learn about text translation and oral interpretation from Spanish to English and vice versa, on a theoretical and practical level. Students will gain theoretical knowledge about the Spanish language and culture in global context while discovering the challenges and opportunities posed by translation and interpretation. A range of types of translation will be explored, including technical, non-technical, and literary translation. Translation technologies will also be evaluated. Basic skills for interpretation will be introduced.

SPA-203 or SPA-208 or 3 years of high school Spanish and consent of the instructor; May require placement exam; Native or heritage speakers of Spanish may obtain instructor's consent
