Biology
Students majoring in biology can earn either the Bachelor of Science or the Bachelor of Arts degree. These two degree options have been thoughtfully designed to provide programs of study that meet the needs of a diverse array of students with general or specialized interests in biology, and who have a variety of career goals. Whether a student intends to pursue graduate studies in the biosciences, enter a professional program, enter the job market as a bachelor’s level scientist, or pursue an interdisciplinary career requiring a strong biology foundation blended with another academic discipline, students can obtain the necessary preparation through one of these biology programs. Students should discuss their interests and goals with their advisor to determine the most appropriate program and curriculum for them.
Several minors offered within the division can be valuable complements to the biology major. These include minors in chemistry, forensic chemistry, environmental science, or mathematics. Given the very broad and interdisciplinary nature of biology, supplementing the major with one of these minors can strengthen a student’s background in an adjacent area and better prepare students for future studies or for entering the job market. The college also offers several minors outside of the division which have proven valuable to science students. Interested students should consult their academic advisor.
Bachelor of Science in Biology
The BS degree provides an extensive and in-depth curriculum that prepares students for a wide variety of career paths for which expertise in biology or related areas is necessary. Students will undertake a thorough study of the foundational concepts and principles of biology: cells/organisms/systems, evolution, information flow, biotechnology, and matter/energy transfer. Electives will provide flexibility that can be used to tailor their program of study to specific needs, goals, and interests. Students learn from both lecture courses and extensive laboratory experiences.
In this highly rigorous program, students will take a minimum of 74 credits of science and math courses. Upon completion, students will have the knowledge and skills necessary for careers in research areas such as pharmaceutical R&D, molecular diagnostics, biological/biochemical analysis, human biology, environmental biology, forensics, or many others. Graduates from the BS Biology program will also be well-prepared for advanced degree programs. The BS degree in Biology is also the ideal program of study for students who aspire to become physicians, veterinarians, dentists, optometrists, pharmacists, physician assistants, medical technologists, etc.
Bachelor of Arts in Biology
The BA degree provides a curriculum that is intended for students requiring some expertise in biology, but who are planning for science-related careers other than research or professional practice. The program requires fewer science credits than the BS degree, while still providing a firm understanding of the foundational concepts and principles of biology. Flexibility is provided through several science elective options. Students pursuing the BA degree are also required to complete at least 15 credits in a second field of study outside the sciences. The second field represents an additional cohesive set of courses in a non-science discipline. This second area of expertise will open doors to many professions that require a blend of disciplines. For example, a student who wants to work in scientific sales might pursue a minor in Marketing. A student who wants to pursue scientific writing pursue a minor in Communication or Writing. A student who wants to do patent law or science policy could pursue a minor in Political Science or Pre-Law.
The Biology Minor is an ideal complement to many other degree programs, and can be especially useful for those planning careers in health care-related areas, environmental sciences, sustainability, or many others.
