Faculty Handbook 2025-2026

Article II - Credit Hour Assignments for Courses

SECTION 1 - Regulatory Bodies

The college programs are approved and registered by the New York State Education Department (NYSED). Keuka College follows the guidelines as established by NYSED (NYS Commissioner of Education Regulations, Section 50.1), which are based on the U.S. Department of Education's definition of a credit hour as found in 34 CFR § 600.2. The institution is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE) which requires the institution to maintain a policy and methodology that is consistent with the applicable laws and regulations. The policy is maintained in the Keuka College Record under Keuka College Course and Credit Information

SECTION 2 - Compliance

The faculty is responsible for Keuka College's curriculum and degree requirements, from proposal to instruction to assessment to revision/discontinuation, including ensuring the appropriate amount and quality of instruction is offered in every course. The Office of Records and Registration is charged with review and oversight of the College's master schedule to ensure all courses scheduled instructional time is aligned with the credits assigned. In addition, the Wertman Office of Digital Education ensures all online courses are delivered by faculty with regular and substantive interaction with students. Compliance with this policy is monitored by the provost.

SECTION 3 - Instructional Time

Regardless of modality or setting, credit hours are assigned to courses based on instructional time and must meet the aforementioned standards. Instructional time includes both regularly scheduled instruction and examinations but does not include break periods. Please consult the Keuka College Record under Course and Credit Information Policy for definition of a credit hour.

SECTION 4 - Class Cancellations

When a class needs to be cancelled - due to instructor availability or an emergency College closure event that impacts instruction - faculty are required to make up the cancelled instructional time. See Appendix N for Class Cancellation Procedures and guidance on Making up Cancelled Instructional Time.
