I. Sabbatical Leave

I. SABBATICAL LEAVE

A. Policy
Sabbatical leaves for professional development may be made available to members of the professional staff who meet the requirements set forth below. A sabbatical leave is granted to further the professional growth and effectiveness of a Faculty member and thus increase the value of their subsequent service to the College. (For Leave of Absence policies, refer to the Employee Handbook.)

B. Purpose
Sabbatical leaves may be granted for research, writing, study, planned travel, formal education, or other experiences of professional value.

C. Eligibility
To be eligible for sabbatical leave, the Faculty member must be tenured and have completed six years of full-time equivalent teaching service at the rank of instructor or higher at Keuka College. If the Faculty member has previously had a sabbatical leave, she or he must have completed six (6) years of full-time equivalent teaching service since that time.

D. Terms and Conditions
Sabbatical leaves may be granted for a period of up to one year at rates not to exceed one semester at full pay or two semesters at one-half basic annual salary.

The President may adjust sabbatical-leave salary to reflect income supportive of the sabbatical that the Faculty member receives. If a Faculty member on leave receives financial assistance from sources other than Keuka College, that person's combined income less project expenses shall not exceed the individual's salary for the project's duration plus an amount which recognizes additional costs associated by conducting the project at a location other than Keuka College. When combined income less projected expenses does exceed the individual's salary for the project duration, Keuka College's share shall be reduced by a proportionate amount. In no case shall the College's commitment be reduced if total earnings are less than full salary for the project duration.

E. Agreement
The Faculty member must agree in writing to return to Keuka College for a full academic year following the academic year in which the sabbatical is taken.

F. Written Report
Upon returning to the College after a sabbatical leave, the Faculty member will submit a written report of his/her activities to the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs and the Faculty Development Committee within one semester. The Faculty member will also present a report to the College community within one academic year. If a Faculty member fails to fulfill these responsibilities within the required time period, he/she will not be eligible for future FDC funding or for FDC awards until the responsibilities are completed.

G. Applications
Faculty interested in applying for sabbaticals must consult with their Division Chairs as far in advance as possible of the sabbatical date to allow adequate time for staffing and financial arrangements to be made. The submission deadline is Oct. 1 for sabbatical leaves the following year. Applications are to be submitted to the Faculty Development Committee Chair with copies to the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs and the Division Chair.

Faculty are required to use the Cover Sheet for Sabbatical Application, Form C-1, which is found below. The merits of the applications shall be reviewed by the Faculty Development Committee following the criteria set forth in the following section. The Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs and the Division Chair will work to ensure that relevant staffing needs will be met. Final approval will rest with the President.
