KC-201D Learning Leadership Through the Outdoors † *
The purpose of this course is to promote a wellness mindset (physical, mental, and spiritual). Through participation in classroom experiential activities and independent learning, students will acquire knowledge and skills that support the practice of wellness in daily life. Students will be guided, through self-assessment and reflection, to identify areas in their life where the practice of wellness will be most beneficial. Finally, students will develop a personal plan for continued practice of wellness in the future. Students may take up to three different Wellness topics for credit. This Wellness course is designed to explore, analyze and facilitate the concept that holistic wellness is crucial to solid leadership, and the idea that the natural environment can directly affect one’s wellness. The course examines models, theories, and foundational background utilized in leadership development and application, as well as in adventure, experiential, and outdoor education. Additionally, this course touches on historical overview of our Nation’s protected public lands, the differences in types of public land and agencies, and begins to explore the practical application of this information. The course format may include lectures, discussions, guest speakers, group presentations, and “Experiential Learning Component” (ELC) which involves outdoor field work.
