Exempt/Non-Exempt Classifications

In order to determine eligibility for overtime, minimum wage and certain employee benefits, the College classifies employees as follows:

Full-Time Regular Employees – Employees who are regularly scheduled to work at least 30 hours per week and who are not classified as seasonal or temporary.

Part-Time Regular Employees – Employes who are regularly scheduled to work 20-29 hours per week. Although these employees have a regular schedule within this range, they may be required to work more than 30 hours in certain weeks based on operational needs.

Limited Part-Time Employees Employees who are regularly scheduled to work 19 hours or fewer per week.

Variable Hour Employees – Employees who do not have regular work schedules. This may include, temporary, seasonal, per diem, adjunct instructors, assistant coaches, and student workers.

Employees are also classified as “exempt” or “nonexempt” for the purpose of overtime and minimum wage payments.

Exempt employees – Exempt employees are generally paid on a salary basis intended to compensate for all hours worked during each work week, regardless of the actual hours worked or schedule. Exempt employees are not eligible for overtime pay.

Non-Exempt employees – Non-exempt employees are eligible for minimum wage and overtime pay in accordance with federal and/or state wage and hour laws. Non-exempt employees are entitled to overtime premium pay at a rate of one and one-half times their regular rate for all hours worked in excess of 40 per workweek.

Employees will be informed of their initial employment classification during the hiring process. If an employee changes positions due to promotion, transfer, or other circumstances , the College will notify the employee if a change in classification or status applies.

If you have any questions regarding your employment classification or if you believe that you are incorrectly classified, please contact your immediate supervisor, Department and/or Division Head, and/or The Office of Human Resources.
