MGT-MGT-561 Healthcare Regulatory Environment

This graduate-level course explores the legal and regulatory frameworks for healthcare and health systems operating within the United States, including but not limited to the Affordable Care Act, HIPAA, CMS (Medicare and Medicaid), and the Joint Commission. Both Federal and State legal ramifications for health systems are evaluated, particularly where cross-state licensure and scope-of-practice may be an issue. Special emphasis will be paid to how federal and state regulations affected healthcare systems in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. Students will learn about certificates of need and how they are used in terms of health services planning and patient access. FDA approval processes and drug safety are also reviewed.
