B. Promotion Policies and Procedures

1. A Faculty member is eligible for promotion is s/he meets the following criteria:

a. From Instructor to Assistant Professor
1) Faculty seeking advancement to Assistant Professor will be evaluated according to expectations at that rank. All three areas of faculty performance (Teaching, Professional Development/Scholarly Activity, and Institutional/Community Service) must have a rating of at least Effective.
2) Appropriate terminal degree as determined by the Division in accordance with standards appropriate to the discipline, OR
3) Master’s degree and the equivalent of three years of full-time teaching as an instructor at a college or university or equivalent part-time teaching or professional experience, OR
4) Special recommendation from the Division Chair and/or Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs.

b. From Assistant Professor to Associate Professor
1) Teaching and one other major evaluated category must have a rating of at least Excellent. The remaining evaluated category must be rated at least Effective.
2) Appropriate terminal degree and the equivalent of six years of full-time teaching in a college or university, of which the equivalent of four years must be at the rank of Assistant Professor, OR
3) Master’s Degree and the equivalent of eight years of full-time teaching in a college or university, of which the equivalent of five years must be at the rank of Assistant Professor, OR
4) Special recommendation from the Division Chair and/or Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs.

c. From Associate Professor to Full Professor
1) All three major categories of evaluation must be rated at least Excellent.
2) Appropriate terminal degree and the equivalent of ten years of full-time teaching in a college or university, of which the equivalent of five years must be at the rank of Associate Professor, OR
3) Special recommendation from the Division Chair and/or Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs.

2. Full and pro-rata part-time Faculty are eligible for promotion.

3. Special Considerations Toward Rank and Promotion

a. Credit Toward Promotion: At the time of initial appointment, the Provost in consultation with the Division Chair may consider awarding credit toward promotion and rank for appropriate professional experience. See Reducing the Probationary Period above.

b. Special Considerations: When special circumstances exist, the Division Chair or Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs can initiate the evaluation process leading to promotion for a Faculty member who does not meet the eligibility requirements for that consideration. The PSC may play a consultative role upon the request of the Faculty member, Division Chair, or Provost. Special considerations are defined as:

1) Performance consistent with or exceeding expectations for the next higher rank, OR
2) Outstanding performance in one or more categories.


c. Lecturers may be considered for promotion based upon recommendation of their Division Chair or Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs. For purposes of promotion, lecturers achieve the evaluation standards for teaching and the other performance area for which they are responsible as specified for promotion in section B2 above.
