HIS-335 The History and Politics of Central and Eastern Europe †
This course is an interdisciplinary survey of Central and Eastern Europe (CEE), a region that includes Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Romania, Bulgaria, Albania, and the successor states of the former Yugoslavia. These countries offer a wide variation of development and change since the fall of communism. Topics explored include state formation and the legacy of the World Wars, the Communist regimes of the region, problems of democratic transition and consolidation, nationalism and ethnic conflict, and integration into the European Union and global world order.
