M.S. in Literacy
The Master of Science program will lead to recommendation for initial certification in literacy, all grades. The curriculum is based on three central and integrated themes—research, application of research-based best practices, and reflection on the efficacy of instructional practice and teacher decision-making.
This online program is for teachers who have successfully completed a teacher certification program and hold a valid Initial, Professional or Permanent New York State classroom teaching certificate in any classroom area, including early childhood, childhood education, and adolescent education. The program is designed to enhance teachers’ knowledge about contemporary theories and research-based practices in literacy. The expectation is that candidates become effective practitioners who understand and deliver high quality literacy instruction and offer proactive literacy leadership in K-12 educational settings.
A distinct feature of this program is its cohort model, meaning that students proceed through the courses in a set pattern, with the same group (cohort). In this way, students develop a strong working relationship with each other, have a support system, and create a network of professional peers across the region.
Upon successful completion of all program requirements, students will be recommended by the college to NYSED for certification. Students must apply for New York State certification through NYSED.gov.
