Student Handbook 2024-2025
Sanction(s) may vary on a case-by-case basis and are proportionate with the severity of the violation committed, the past and current history of violations by the responsible student, and may become progressively more severe if the student engages in further violations.
LEVEL 1 SANCTIONS CAN INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:
Accountability Meeting(s) – These check-in and follow-up meetings will be with various campus offices and/or other identified professionals on campus that you could learn how to utilize resources that may help you learn more on accountability in regards to your actions and consequences to those actions.
Alcohol and Other Drug (AOD) Counseling Assessment - An evaluation/intervention with a counselor in the Health & Counseling Center. You are required to follow up on any further recommendations made. Please contact the Counseling Services Center office at (315) 279-5368, or by stopping by the office on the first floor of the Keuka Commons. Counseling Services will confirm if/when this is complete. An initial intake assessment/treatment can also be obtained by contacting Finger Lakes Addictions Counseling & Referral Agency (FLACRA) at (315) 536-7751. The results of the assessment need to be shared with the Director of Community Standards & Student Intervention as verification of completion. During your assessment/treatment, please complete a signed release form giving permission for the individual completing the assessment/treatment to verify completion. You must comply with any recommendations made for further assessment or treatment.
AlcoholEdu for Sanctions – An online alcohol education program.
Campus Service – A number of hours of community service done on the College campus. You must submit a proof of completion by submitting a "Community Service Form" which is attached to the outcome letter.
Community Service - A number of hours of community service (volunteer work) done in the community of choice. You must submit a proof of completion by submitting a "Community Service Form" which is attached to the outcome letter.
Counseling Assessment - An evaluation/intervention with a counselor in the Health & Counseling Center. You are required to follow up on any further recommendations made. Counseling Services will confirm if/when this is complete.
Educational Sanction - A sanction designed to provide an additional educational opportunity for a student who has been found responsible for violating the Student Code of Community Standards.
Letter of Apology – A written or verbal expression of remorse and the willingness to take responsibility for a transgression that is extended to an individual who was inconvenienced, insulted or otherwise harmed by the respondent’s behavior. As you draft your letter, please reflect and address the following questions -- (1) What happened? (2) What was your role/responsibility? (3) How do you feel about the harm caused? (4) What will be your behavior in the future? (5) What amends will you make to repair harm/rebuild trust?
Parental or Guardian Notification - Parents may be notified regarding alcohol and drug violations for which the student is found responsible.
Reflection Paper – A written expression of this incident to address the following (4) pieces of criteria; 1. Do you take personal responsibility for your conduct? Can you identify key strategies to redefine your behavior in avoiding recidivism?, 2. What are some support services and resources (both offered directly by the institution, and indirectly with partnering agencies) in order to seek further assistance?, 3. What do you feel are the implications of your conduct and harm caused to others?, and 4. Why might the Keuka College community be concerned about your conduct? Reflect on differences between your values, the institutions values, and your actions.
Residence Hall or Apartment Relocation – You are required to move from your current housing assignment to a new housing assignment.
Responsible Decision Making Workshop – A campus program or session conducted by a faculty or staff member around health and wellness, interpersonal skills building, etc. Attendance will be taken for verification of completion of the workshop. This workshop will be conducted in person, unless otherwise noted.
Restitution - Money assessed to students for damage done to an individual or College property. Damages may be assessed to individuals who have been found responsible for the damage and/or to a group of individuals. Damages not associated with specific individuals may be billed to a hall, building, or organization. This money is paid to Keuka College by students who have been found responsible for specific violations of the Student Code of Community Standards or other College policies.
Substance Workshop – A 60-minute class held on campus at 6:00 p.m. This workshop is conducted by a staff member from the Council on Alcoholism and Addictions of the Finger Lakes. Attendance will be taken for verification of completion of the workshop. This workshop will be conducted in person, unless otherwise noted.
Written notice to a student that continued or further violations of any College policy, rule, or regulation within a specified period of time may result in more severe disciplinary action.
Level 1 sanctions cannot be appealed, absent of procedural error.
LEVEL 2 SANCTIONS ARE (LISTED IN ORDER OF SEVERITY FROM HIGHEST TO LOWEST)” with the following:
Expulsion: The student’s status in the College is terminated, and the student is declared ineligible to reapply for admission. In the event of an expulsion, no refund will be granted to the student. This includes tuition, housing, food, and fees. The student is banned from institutional property, functions, events, and activities unless they receive prior written approval from an appropriate College official. This sanction may be enforced with a trespass action, as necessary. A transcript notation may be applied.
Suspension: The student’s status in the College is terminated, and the student is not permitted to register at Keuka College for a designated period of time. The student is typically required to vacate institutional property within 24 hours of notification of the action, though this deadline may be extended at the discretion of the Director of Community Standards & Student Intervention or their designee. At the end of the suspension period, the student must submit a written request for reinstatement to the Office of Community Standards & Student Intervention. Any specific requirements identified at the time of suspension or at the time of the request for reinstatement must be fulfilled before reinstatement will be considered. In the event of a suspension, no refund will be granted to the student. This includes tuition, housing, food, and fees. During an institution-wide suspension, the student is banned from institutional property, functions, events, and activities unless they receive prior written approval from an appropriate College official. This sanction may be enforced with a trespass action, as necessary. A transcript notation may be applied.
Deferred Suspension: The student is expected to refrain from all further campus violations for a designated period of time. Further violations of College policy or the Student Code of Community Standards may result in the student being suspended. The College may impose conditions during the deferral period.
Disciplinary Probation: Disciplinary Probation is a warning status, and as such, involvement in any type of disciplinary violation during this time could result in more severe sanctions and additional restrictions.
Removal from residence halls/Cancellation of housing contract/agreement: The housing contract/agreement, which provides resident student housing and food privileges, is revoked for a specified period of time. Renewal is at the discretion of the Office of Campus Life.
Deferred removal from the residence halls: The student is expected to refrain from all further campus violations for a designated period of time. Further violations of College policy or the Student Code of Community Standards may result in immediate removal from on-campus housing.
Campus Restriction(s): The student is restricted from/of certain aspects of campus and community life and is expected to refrain from all further campus violations for a designated period of time. Further violations of College policy or the Student Code of Community Standards may result in more severe disciplinary action.
Level 2 sanctions can be appealed based on the following criteria:
Appropriateness of Sanction(s) - The sanction(s) imposed are substantially inconsistent with the severity of violation(s).
New Evidence - New evidence, which was unknown or unavailable during the original hearing, that could substantially impact the original finding or sanction. A summary of this new evidence and its potential impact must be included.
Review of Procedures - A procedural error or omission occurred that significantly impacted the outcome of the hearing (e.g. substantiated bias, material deviation from established procedures, etc.).
