II. Credit Hour Assignments for Courses
A. In accordance with U.S. Department of Education guidelines, a credit hour is defined as college-level credit or the transfer of coursework from another accredited institution. More specifically, a credit hour equals 12.5 academic hours of instruction time/instructor-led activities plus 25 academic hours of out-of-class student work. Per U.S. Department of Education guidelines, the New York State Education Department, Middle States, and the Council on Higher Education, an academic hour equals 50 minutes. One credit hour reflects an amount of work represented in the course learning outcomes and verified by evidence of student achievement for these learning outcomes. All courses are required to meet this standard regardless of delivery method (online, hybrid, accelerated, etc.): The completion of one hour (at least 55 minutes) of classroom or direct Faculty instruction and a minimum of two hours of out-of-class work each week for one semester of approximately 14 weeks; or
1. The completion of an equivalent amount of Faculty instructional time and student work, as stipulated above that may occur over a different amount of time; or
2. The completion of an institutionally sanctioned academic activity (e.g., internship, practicum, laboratory or studio work) can also be granted credits so long as the activity is equivalent to the amount of work stipulated above and may occur over a different amount of time
.
Faculty members in academic departments will propose the number of credit hours to be assigned to each new course to the Curriculum Committee based on the preceding definitions of a credit hour. Compliance with this policy is monitored by the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs.
B. Many one-semester courses provide three credit hours; however, credit in some courses may vary. Courses for which three credits hours per semester are assigned require approximately 113 clock hours.
C. Semester and quarter term credits are transferred from other accredited colleges to Keuka College. Quarter credit times 0.67 equals semester credits.
D. Topics and performance courses: Each division identifies which courses may be repeated. The sponsoring division also determines the number of credits up to but not exceeding 8 credit hours. These credits may be counted toward graduation with subsequent Curriculum Committee approval. Each sponsoring division is responsible for a change in description for repeated classes. Students may take up to three different KC 201 courses for credit. No other one-credit courses can be repeated for credit for graduation (examples: SS 160, Life Work Planning).
