COVID19 Policy Addendum - Fall 2020
Please be advised that the severity and frequency of a violation and a student’s prior conduct history will be taken into consideration when determining any sanctioning.
We will document and address conduct violations internally at the College, but at any point in time the College feels the community’s safety is being jeopardized by a student’s actions or behaviors, they may be turned over to New York State for punitive measures.
These expectations are a supplement to existing college policies, not a replacement. The policies, along with recommended sanctioning guidelines, are presented to help you understand the potential consequences for violating them. Where there are conflicts between this addendum and the posted Student Code of Conduct, the addendum will serve as the official policy.

Students Leaving the Community for Extended Periods of Time and Returning
Some students may need to leave campus because they have jobs they need to maintain in order to pay for college expenses. Others need medicine, food, and other necessary provisions. However, students are expected to remain on campus as much as possible and should not take extended or unnecessary trips away from campus.
Anytime a student leaves campus, it is expected they will take appropriate precautions (i.e. physical distancing and use of a face covering). It is expected that residents will remain on campus and that commuter students will limit their travel between their off-campus residence and campus.
A student requesting any irregular travel, must request to do so from Health & Counseling Services by emailing health@keuka.edu.
Students that exhibit recurring or intentional negligence of these expectations are subject to disciplinary action and may include:
-
Recommended 1st Violation – Educational Conversation & Written Warning
-
Recommended 2nd Violation – Housing Probation - End of Agreement, Parental Notification
-
Recommended 3rd Violation - Loss of Housing/Removal from Campus (Without Refund)
Definitions:
-
Educational Conversation – The Conduct Officer will have a conversation with the student about the policy violations, how it impacts the remaining on-campus community, and the consequences of repeated violations.
-
Educational Sanction – A paper or project that involves the student conducting research related to the policy violation, and then being able to demonstrate knowledge of the potential negative impacts of violating that policy, typically via a written paper or project.
-
Housing Probation - End of Agreement – The student is placed on a probationary status in the residence halls until the current Housing Agreement ends, which is generally going to be until the end of the Spring semester. It carries with it the understanding that further violations may lead to more severe sanctions, such as a temporary or permanent loss of housing.
-
Housing Probation - Extended – The student’s probationary status will be extended past the end of the Housing Agreement and could include not being welcomed back onto campus in future years.
-
Parental Notification – Parents may be notified of the behavior and the progression of the behavior based on the severity and circumstances of the violation. The intent is to let parents know the resident is moving toward being removed from campus if further violations occur. The implications are that if you are removed from campus for behavioral issues, you are still accountable for the cost of your entire Housing Agreement and Keuka College believes parents have a right to know that possibility exists and to step in or work with the college in remediation measures to contribute to the resident’s success as a student at Keuka.
-
Fine $200 – The college will impose a monetary fine of $200 on the student’s account. This is a standard fee for the administrative costs generally accumulated during extensive conduct violations attributed to a lack of adherence to stated conduct requirements.
-
Loss of Housing – The student must immediately vacate their on-campus housing. Depending on the severity of the violation, the length of this loss of housing may range from one semester to a permanent loss of housing.
-
Disciplinary Probation: A warning period, during which further violations of the Student Code of Conduct will result in more severe sanctions and additional restrictions. Appropriate staff and faculty will be notified of the student’s warning period. This sanction may limit student participation in other college activities or programs, as determined by the aforementioned staff and faculty.
