Residency requirements
Living in the residence halls at Keuka College is both a requirement and a privilege. The residence hall experience is an important part of a student’s total education. Living, studying, dining, and socializing in proximity with other students enables the development of interdependence, respect for others, and social and interpersonal skills. Being part of the residential community is such an important part of the Keuka College experience that the College requires it.
All full-time students (defined as enrolled in 12 or more credit hours in a given semester) not living with his/her parents or legal guardian within 30 miles of the College (at the address indicated on the student’s financial aid FAFSA form) are required to live in a residence hall. Student affairs staff may grant requests for exceptions under the following circumstances:
- 23 years or older,
- married (certificate required),
- dependent(s) under 18 years of age living with him/her,
- internship/practicum that requires site residency and/or is more than 30 miles from campus and a student wishes to secure residency in close proximity to the site (this information will be checked with student’s academic advisor)
- medical or mental health hardship (Medical Exception Form must be completed and attached to the application)
Returning students must submit written requests for fall housing exceptions on the dates listed on the application during the spring semester prior to the request. Spring housing exceptions must be requested on the dates listed on the application during the fall semester prior to the request. There will be no exceptions to these deadlines. Students who miss the published deadlines will be required to wait until the next scheduled application period.
In considering requests, the student’s complete educational record, including GPA, student conduct records and other information may be reviewed. The requested information may be confirmed through the relevant College office(s). Requests based on medical and/or mental health hardships need to be accompanied by a letter from a physician or certified mental health professional, which specifies the condition(s) upon which the exception is being requested. (Keuka College health and counseling services do not provide these letters.)
Room and board fees are removed based on the approval of the specific circumstances. The College reserves the right to revoke this approval if the request is found to include incorrect or invalid information. The College also reserves the right to revoke the approval if the student engages in any activity/behavior while living off campus that violates any applicable laws and/or College policies. In such cases the student and the billing addressee will be notified.
Students who are approved for an exception to the residency requirement will likely have their financial aid repackaged as a result of the change in fees. It is the responsibility of the student to confirm the impact that living off-campus will have on their financial aid and billing and make an informed decision. If approved, exception to residency is only valid for the academic year for which it is submitted. The form must be resubmitted every academic year to continue to be considered for exception.
